William Penn Charter School, a co-ed, preK-12 independent Quaker school, seeks a full-time Lower School Literacy Coordinator for maternity leave coverage from March 1 - June 15, 2021. Applicants must possess an undergraduate degree in elementary education or a related field (an advanced degree is preferred) as well as reading specialist certification and a minimum of five years of experience. The Literacy Coordinator will partner with the Lower School Director and classroom teachers to provide an engaging literacy program, including differentiated strategies to support a broad range of learners. In addition, they will guide teachers in using the Fountas and Pinnell assessment system to set instructional goals for students and also track data. Prior experience with Columbia Teachers’ College Readers and Writers Workshop, Wilson and Fundations is preferred.
The successful candidate will also embrace student-centered pedagogy, model curiosity and a desire for professional growth, and exhibit a willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues. Additionally, they will demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion both in their teaching practice and in building relationships. The ability to guide teachers in differentiating instruction and working closely and compassionately with families is central to this role. Familiarity with the principles and practices of Quakerism and Quaker education is desirable.
Responsibilities of the Lower School Literacy Coordinator include:
Help teachers implement the reading and writing curriculum by modeling lessons and working with student groups in-person and virtual settings
Work collaboratively with faculty on identifying reading/writing strengths and provide strategies, materials, and tools in support of student growth.
Provide reading/writing related professional development.
Monitor student progress and oversee reading/writing support plans for students.
Collaborate with the Lower School learning specialist regarding student support recommendations.
Communicate with parents around student concerns in reading/writing and recommend support plans as needed.
Attend grade level child study and learning support team meetings
Provide reading, writing, or word study lessons to students in both virtual and in-person settings
Other duties as assigned by the Lower School Director
