William Penn Charter School, a co-ed, pre-K-12 independent Quaker day school, seeks a full-time Lower School Assistant Director to begin July 2021. This is an 11 month position. The primary responsibility is to assist the Director of the Lower School to ensure the overall mission of Penn Charter is implemented in grades PK-5. Applicants must possess an undergraduate or graduate degree in education or a related field (an advanced degree is strongly preferred). Candidates must also have at least five years of experience teaching lower school children.

The successful candidate will embrace student-centered pedagogy, model curiosity and a desire for professional growth, and exhibit a willingness to work collaboratively with colleagues. Additionally, they will demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion both in their teaching or administrative practice and in building relationships with all members of our community. The ability to effectively respond to student behaviors as well as partner and communicate with families is central to this role. Familiarity with the principles and practices of Quakerism and Quaker education, Responsive Classroom, Project Based Learning, Readers and Writer’s Workshop Model, and Math in Focus is highly desirable.

Areas of responsibility:

• Work with the Director of Lower School in fostering and maintaining a positive learning and social climate in grades PK-5
• Oversee the Lower School behavior system including responding to student behaviors, training, coaching and assisting teachers in responding effectively and communicating and partnering with families
• Schedule, organize, and oversee daily substitutes
• Plan, organize, and oversee Lower School assemblies
• Develop yearly schedules and those for non-routine school days as needed
• Partner with the Director of Lower School on the supervision and professional growth of faculty
• Oversee after school student activities including enrichment and the after school program
• Represent the Director of the Lower School when they are away from school.

Key relationships: Reports to the Lower School Director; works with members of the Lower School Learning team; Lower School faculty, students, and families.
