Germantown Academy, located in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, is seeking qualified, experienced candidates for a full-time position of Director of Security to start in July 2021. The Academy, founded in 1759, is a non-sectarian, coeducational, college preparatory school of more than 1,100 students in Grades PK-12, located in the northwest suburbs of Philadelphia on a campus of 126 acres.

Position Purpose: Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the Director of Security will provide for the safety and protection of all students, employees, and property of Germantown Academy.
Develop a constructive, proactive departmental philosophy, establish attendance, dress, and performance objectives for security personnel, and develop operational procedures to guide personnel in the performance of their duties.
Establish clear lines of accountability and command within the school’s security department.
Prepare and administer the department budget in consultation with the Director of Facilities.
In collaboration with the Director of Human Resources, recruit, employ, and train security personnel as required.
Assume responsibility for implementation of the school’s crisis management plan and security-related policies and regulations. Evaluate the school’s crisis management plan on a continuing basis and recommend changes as necessary.
Oversee the placement, use, and maintenance of school electronic security equipment including security cameras, intrusion alarm systems, and campus radio system. Maintain first aid and AED equipment with the school nurse and athletic trainers.
Coordinate all special security needs deemed necessary for school meetings or activities.
Serve as the school’s liaison to the Whitemarsh Township Police Department and other regulated agencies.
Direct the deployment of safety and law enforcement personnel to manage routine operations and emergency situations. Serve as a link between units responding to a crisis on school property and school administrators.
Support school administrators in matters of student discipline when requested.
Collaborate with the Director of Equity and Inclusion on matters pertaining to healthy relationships between security personnel and students, staff, administrators, parents, and the community.
Display the highest ethical and professional behavior in working with students, parents, school employees, and outside agencies associated with the school.
Oversee and coordinate the fire drill and fire safety program as well as intruder and lockdown drill programs. Prepare and maintain reports on all drills.
Collaborate with school administrators and serve on the Safe 2 Say task force.
Develop and deliver appropriate professional development presentations to students and employees on matters of safety and security.
Coordinate and co-chair the school’s Safety Committee with the Director of Facilities.
Coordinate the preparation of local, state, and federal reports relative to areas of responsibility. Assist with developing and coordinating cooperative agreements, interagency agreements, and contracts with other agencies.
Submit written reports of all incidents of vandalism, violence, or other security violations and keep a record of same.
Perform any other duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment as assigned by the Head of School or Director of Facilities and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation.
Physical and Environmental Demands:
Use strength to lift items needed to perform the functions of the job.
Sit, stand, and walk for required periods of time.
Speak clearly and hear adequately. Communicate effectively in English.
Exposure to a variety of weather conditions year-round.
Extensive law enforcement background and experience.
Experience supervising and coordinating a school security department preferred.
Knowledge of security measures, security policies and procedures, and crisis management. Ability to maintain order and to work with groups and individuals on matters of security and crisis management.
NASRO Basic SRO training course completion (per PA Act 67 of 2019 and applicable amendments).
NASRO Advanced SRO training preferred.
Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative. Exhibit a personality that demonstrates enthusiasm and interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and the community.
Hold a valid driver’s license with no serious violations.
